Another Moving Day at Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital

9/19/2007 12:00:00 AM

This Friday is another moving day at Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital, as one more stage of the major redevelopment is complete. Numerous outpatient clinics will move into a totally renovated new department. The clinics will serve patients in this new area, beginning Monday, September 24.

The new outpatient clinics are located on the main floor off Mississaga Street, in the space that just 18 months ago was the hospital’s emergency department. “This looks nothing like the old ER. You won’t recognize it now,” says __Title___ Manager Lynn Cherry. “Our outpatient clinics are now in an area that looks brand new, and is purpose built for the many different procedures we offer here.

Outpatient clinic services range from biopsies to minor hernia repairs to carpal tunnel procedures. For the most part, any minor surgery requiring only a local anesthetic happens here. The area also includes Soldiers’ fracture clinic, pain management clinic and the very busy laser eye clinic.

“Until now, these various clinics were scattered all over the hospital. Often patients waited in the halls because we had no space for waiting rooms,” explains Cherry. “Having everything now in one place will be much more comfortable for our patients and we will be easier to find. It will also be better for our staff, to work closer together as a team. And in a very practical sense we’ll be able to share needed equipment, without running all over the hospital looking for it in another clinic.”

The blood transfusion and AIC (what is this?) clinics will also move into this area, sometime later this fall. Soldiers’ telehealth studios have already relocated here.

Patients who have an appointment in one of the outpatient clinics can enter off Mississaga Street. There is an area for patient drop-off and pickup under the awning that used to be the ER entrance. The closest parking is across the street in a privately-owned lot. Patients may also use the main hospital entrance. **Please note that the Mississaga Street entrance is for outpatient clinics only. It is not intended for general access to the rest of the hospital.
