30 Family Practice Residents Visit Soldiers’

10/9/2007 12:00:00 AM

Thirty family practice residents from the University of Toronto will spend tomorrow, Wednesday, October 10, training at Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital and getting a look at the City of Orillia.

The annual “Core Rotation Day” gives the residents a taste of family medicine outside of a major centre. It’s also a chance for the hospital and community to showcase the opportunities here. It is hoped several of the residents may return next year to complete their last full year of residency in Orillia.

“Over the past decade, our teaching link with the U of T family practice program has been one of our most important recruitment tools,” says Chief of Staff Dr. Don Atkinson. “Numerous residents who have spent a year at Soldiers’ have ended up staying in Orillia, including two residents who trained here last year.”

Soldiers’ Memorial is one of only three hospitals outside of Toronto that is formally linked to the full-year family practice residency program at the University of Toronto.

Tomorrow, the residents will spend the morning at the hospital in short information sessions presented by several physicians and hospital staff. They will then enjoy lunch and a boat cruise on the lake sponsored by the Orillia and Area Physician Recruitment and Retention Committee.
