Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital Board Announcement

2/12/2008 12:00:00 AM

The Board of Directors of Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital announces today that Mary Silverthorn is stepping down from the Board and her position as Chair.

“This has been a very difficult personal decision for me,” says Silverthorn. “I have chosen to pursue an employment opportunity with the hospital. Whether or not I am the successful candidate, the application places me in a direct conflict of interest, and I cannot continue in my role as Chair and Director.”

“Being on the board has been a profound learning experience and I will miss the counsel and the company of the other members,” Silverthorn adds. “For now I will observe the board’s continued progress with interest, as a corporate member.”

Effective immediately, 1st Vice Chair Bob Middaugh takes over the role of Hospital Board Chair. Middaugh is retired from a 34-year career in policing. He is a former Assistant Deputy Minister in the Government of Ontario and a former Chief of Police for both York Region and Hamilton. In addition to his duties on the board, he also volunteers weekly with the hospital Volunteer Association as a patient porter.

“Mary has been an excellent leader and we wish her all the best,” says Middaugh. “We will continue to focus on the priorities that she helped to establish, including community engagement, a by-law review and work on our strategic priorities. Our Board is committed to providing excellent care for our patients and a healthy workplace for our staff, physicians and volunteers.”

As per hospital bylaws, elected board members are chosen by members of the hospital corporation. The Board is then responsible for choosing executive positions, including the Chair, from among the elected Directors. Within the next few weeks, the Board will confirm Middaugh or another Director to fill the Chair’s position until June.
