Surgical Services Postponed at Soldiers’ Memorial

2/13/2008 12:00:00 AM

Surgeries are being postponed at Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital this week after an equipment malfunction led to a buildup of steam in the hospital’s five operating rooms.

All affected patients are being notified and will have their surgeries rescheduled as soon as possible. Emergency surgeries are being redirected to three nearby hospitals.

“We have great assistance from our hospital partners in Midland, Muskoka and Collingwood to ensure that any necessary emergency surgeries will be performed,” says Surgical Services Program Director Norah Holder. “Our own staff from numerous areas of Soldiers’ have also done a tremendous job to ensure all equipment has been re-sterilized and all of the operating rooms have been thoroughly cleaned and are ready to reopen.”

At this point, the hospital’s materials management team is working around the clock to ensure all necessary supplies that were damaged by the humidity, can be replenished. Equipment suppliers are also checking numerous key pieces of equipment to ensure no damage occurred.

As needed supplies are delivered, the operating rooms will open on a limited basis over the rest of this week. It is expected the entire surgical services area will be back to full functioning by next week.
