Canada celebrates National Nursing Week

5/12/2008 12:00:00 AM

Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital will join other health care professionals and governments across Canada this week to commemorate National Nursing Week. It is an opportunity to celebrate a profession that makes enormous contributions to our health system and to the lives of Canadians every day.

Nurses have a positive effect on the lives of our patients: improving clinical care, leading advocacy work and advancing technological innovation in all practice settings. They are also committed to bringing in new approaches and new models of care, giving increased attention to health promotion and illness prevention. The nurses at Soldiers’ have been involved in numerous patient care initiatives at the hospital, such as HOBIC, Gift of Life, and Patient Safety.

This year the celebration of the centennial anniversary of the Canadian Nurses Association (CAN) coincides with the centennial of our hospital. It is incredibly significant for a community of our size to have access to the best health care for over a century.

“This is an historic opportunity to celebrate nursing at Soldiers’. Nurses, along with the hospital, have been providing over 100 years of excellent care to our community,” says Barbara Jones, Director of Professional Practice at Soldiers’.

Nursing Week activities at Soldiers’ include information workshops and luncheons. In addition, there will be spa and health activities offered for all staff on Monday, May 12, Wednesday, May 14, and Friday, May 16; and on Wednesday, May 14, guest speaker Dianne Martin, Executive Director of the Registered Practical Nurses Association of Ontario (RPNAO) will offer a glimpse of what it means to be a nurse.

Join us at Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital the week of May 12-18 as we celebrate our nurses!
