Mary Silverthorn appointed to joint human resource position

5/14/2008 12:00:00 AM

Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare (MAHC) and Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital (OSMH) in Orillia announced today the appointment of Mary Silverthorn to the newly created position of Integrated Vice President, Human Resources effective May 20, 2008.

Silverthorn will work collaboratively with the existing HR staff at both organizations to provide strategic leadership and direction, and report directly to the CEOs of MAHC and OSMH.

“I’m very excited about this tremendous new opportunity to work with two successful and highly respected health care organizations,” said Silverthorn.   “I look forward to building upon the prior working relationship I was fortunate to establish with each organization, and the LHIN, as a past Director and Chair of the OSMH Board.”

Mary holds an Honours Degree in Business Administration from Brock University, an M.B.A from the University of Ottawa, and is a member of the Human Resources Professional Association of Ontario. Next spring she will receive her Certified Human Resource Professional (CHRP) designation from the Human Resource Professionals Association of Ontario.

“We’re fortunate to have been able to recruit someone of Mary’s calibre to this critical new role,” said Elisabeth Riley, OSMH President and CEO.   “Recruiting and retaining quality staff is an enormous challenge that is only going to get more difficult for all hospitals.   Mary’s combination of past HR experience and demonstrated leadership will help both organizations deal with these challenges now and into the future.”

Most recently, Mary has been employed as the Manager, Human Resources at the OPP (Ontario Provincial Police) headquarters in Orillia.     She has past experience in organizational development and public policy through her previous employment with the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services.

“Hospitals across Ontario are being encouraged to work collaboratively to seek out integration opportunities like this that allow us to optimize the use of our resources,” said Barry Lockhart, President and Chief Executive Officer of MAHC.  “The fact that both organizations had unfilled vacancies for their senior HR position at the same time, created the opportunity for the establishment of a single position to serve both organizations.”

MAHC and OSMH work collaboratively on several fronts, including the recent joint purchase of new diagnostic imaging equipment, and they are also currently recruiting for an integrated Director of Pharmacy position.
