Local paediatrician receives national award

8/5/2008 12:00:00 AM

The Canadian Paediatric Society recently selected Dr. W. Gary Smith, a paediatrician at Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital in Orillia, as the first recipient of the Canadian Paediatric Society’s Certificate of Merit for the province of Ontario.

The Canadian Paediatric Society’s prestigious Certificate of Merit is awarded regionally to members who have worked to make a difference to the health of children. Dr Smith’s activities in research, teaching, vision and leadership in child and youth health in Ontario were cited as hallmarks of excellence that qualified him for this award. Previously Dr. Smith had been awarded the academic position of Associate Professor, Department of Paediatrics, University of Toronto, the only paediatrician with this academic rank outside a major teaching center.

“I am especially honoured to receive this award as it is a national award and the first for Ontario. I certainly need to acknowledge the encouragement I have received over the years to enable me to undertake these activities,” said Gary, who credits his wife, Vera, as a loyal supporter over the years. “In addition I think this award really recognizes the incredible paediatric nursing and physician teams we have at the Regional Paediatric and Perinatal Center in Orillia. I would especially note my colleagues who should share equally in this award. The paediatric centre at Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital has always strived for excellence and this award confirms that quest.”

The award was presented to Dr. Smith at the Section of Community Paediatrics, Hospital for Sick Children, Teaching Awards Dinner on June 19, 2008.
