In June 2010, the Government of Ontario passed the Excellent Care for All Act (ECFAA) Act, which fosters a culture of continuous quality improvement in health care, making sure the needs of patients come first.
One of the ways that the ECFAA is helping hospitals meet community expectations regarding quality, patient safety and accountability is through the public reporting of Quality Improvement Plans (QIP).
Quality Improvement Plans (QIPs) are, as the name suggests, all about improvement. They are an opportunity for organizations to focus on how and what to improve, in the name of better patient-focused care. And they are designed individually by every organization.
These plans are an opportunity to highlight our commitment to:
- delivering high quality health care;
- creating a positive patient experience;
- ensuring that it is responsive and accountable to the public;
- holding its executive team accountable for its achievement; and
- being transparent.
Here at OSMH, we welcome the Act as it supports our strategic goals of being a hospital known for patient and staff safety. Our QIP is one tool that we are using to help us document and review our current performance in a variety of areas. With this plan, we will be able to clearly see our targeted areas for improvement and chart our progress.
