OSMH Future Hospital project envisions campus with core hospital and ambulatory care centre

Monday, November 27, 2017

(November 27, 2017– Orillia, ON) The campus of Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital (OSMH) will look much different years from now under a concept being considered as part of its Future Hospital project.

The proposal would distribute services into two main facilities, a core hospital providing 24/7 emergency, ICU, obstetrical, paediatrics, mental health and surgical services along with inpatient medical beds; and a separate ambulatory care centre with a focus on patients that need care from specialized and interdisciplinary teams without requiring an inpatient stay.  The ambulatory care centre would function similar to specialty clinics providing procedures and follow up care all during daytime hours.

“We’ve been testing the concept over the past several months with physicians, staff, patients and community groups, and we’re getting excellent feedback,” said Pat Campbell, OSMH President and CEO.   “While no decisions have been made, the direction we’re leaning aligns closely with both our own Clinical Services Plan and provincial direction of the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and the North Simcoe Muskoka LHIN.”

Site redevelopment is an absolute must according to Campbell.  “To focus more of our resources on direct patient care, we need to significantly improve the efficiency of our physical infrastructure, which will require decommissioning older sections of the hospital in favour of more modern facilities that will cost less to operate.”

The long road toward eventual redevelopment has taken its first few steps but is already nearing its first major milestone with delivery of a key planning document known as a Pre-Capital Submission to the provincial government; if approved, it would open the door for more detailed planning work in 2018.

Community engagement has been and will continue to be a key component of the success of the planning exercise and will expand in 2018 to give more people the opportunity to influence the eventual solution. Community groups interested in scheduling a presentation from the hospital are encouraged to contact OSMH Community Relations at info@osmh.on.ca, or (705) 325-2201, ext. 3798.   For the latest information about the Future Hospital project, visit our website at www.osmh.on.ca
