Regional Kidney Care Program Simcoe Muskoka launches new digital patient record system

Monday, January 29, 2018

(Monday, January 29, 2018 – Orillia, ON) Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital (OSMH) and the Regional Kidney Care Program Simcoe Muskoka (RKCP SM) officially cut the ribbon celebrating the launch of the new Regional Dialysis Information System (RDIS) today. The system went live at OSMH on Wednesday, January 17 and has been a great success.

The RDIS is an electronic medical record system that will strive to eliminate paper patient records.  The RDIS will also be fully integrated with in-centre dialysis machines across the region.  This means all machine data previously tracked on paper will now flow directly from the machine into the patient’s electronic record, allowing trending of relevant clinical data, maximizing technology to enhance patient care.

“This is a great step forward for the Regional Kidney Care Program Simcoe Muskoka,” said Cheryl Harrison, Vice-President of Regional Patient Programs at OSMH.

“With the new electronic record, RKCP SM staff will be able to spend more time at the bedside delivering high-quality care and less time faxing records between sites of the program allowing for smoother care transitions.  With the system being fully integrated throughout the region, all renal patients will benefit as care teams can coordinate care and access the most up to date information in patient charts in real time,” said Harrison.

The RDIS project has been in the planning stages forseveral years.  With 2018 being the launch year for RKCP SM to transitionto the digital record system.

“This will greatly improve information sharing and create efficiencies across our program.” said Marni Van Kessel, Director, RKCPSM. “The team is actively looking at future enhancements which may include a patient portal that will allow patients access to their blood work, medication lists, educational materials and provide the ability for automatic appointment reminders and for patients to book their own clinic appointments.”

The RDIS went live at OSMH on Wednesday, January 17, and will continue to be implemented at the remaining regional satellite sites over the course of the next 18 months.
