5/4/2012 12:00:00 AM

(Friday, May 4, 2012 - Orillia, ON)  – Years of commitment to community health care has earned national honours for Dr. Don Atkinson, Chief of Staff and Vice-President, Medical Affairs at Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital (OSMH).

Dr. Atkinson was presented with the 2012 Canadian Society of Physician Executives (CSPE) Excellence in Medical Leadership Award (Chris Carruthers Award) at the Canadian Conference for Physician Leadership in Ottawa.  This annual award recognizes a physician who has made an outstanding contribution to the development and mentorship of medical leaders in the field of health services leadership and management.

“To be nominated and then chosen by my peers for this award is a humbling experience and a truly unexpected honour,” says Atkinson.

“I have been fortunate in my career to have worked with some great physician leaders who have served as mentors to me, and now in my current role to be able to do the same and provide some guidance and support to the physicians I work with on a daily basis, it’s very rewarding.”

Since joining OSMH in 2007, Dr. Atkinson has been responsible for physician professional practice, resource planning and recruitment, diagnostic imaging, pharmacy, laboratory services and medical education.  He has also been actively involved in heath care planning at the provincial level serving on both government committees and provincial health care forums.  In 2009, he was awarded the Certified Physician Executive Designation by the American College of Physician Executives.  He is a past president of the CSPE and a member of the American College of Physician Executives.

“Dr. Atkinson is not only influential in the day-to-day running of the hospital, he thinks strategically by planning initiatives that impact future direction of the hospital,” says Dr. Tim Tigchelaar, Chief of Emergency Medicine at OSMH. “I have enjoyed Dr. Atkinson’s tenure as Chief of Staff. He has been a great team builder, an excellent communicator and instrumental in facilitating a strategic vision for the hospital. He is not only highly qualified, he provides high quality leadership.”

“It has been wonderful to work with Don and learn from him. I think very highly of his practicality, approachability, clinical involvement and his leadership abilities,” adds Dr. Kim McIntosh, Chief of Family Medicine at OSMH.

“The Board is thrilled to have one of our leaders and physicians bestowed with this great honour,” says John Cameron, Chair, OSMH Board of Directors. “Don has exceeded our expectations in this role throughout his tenure as Chief of Staff.”
