OSMH declares outbreak on Soldiers One inpatient unit

5/18/2012 12:00:00 AM

(Friday, May 18, 2012 - Orillia, ON) – Due to increased transmission of a bacteria known as VRE (vancomycin-resistant enterococcus), Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital (OSMH) has declared an outbreak on its 33-bed Soldiers’ One unit effective today.

As a result, no new patients can be admitted onto the unit and visitors are being asked to closely adhere to appropriate hand hygiene, which includes washing their hands before and after entering any patient care areas.  Visitors to patients in Isolation Rooms will also be required to report to the nurses’ station where they will be provided with disposable gowns, gloves and masks.

The hospital has increased cleaning on the affected unit and is examining the possibility of opening temporary beds on other units to deal with any potential back-up as patients are admitted into the hospital.

Anyone who is feeling unwell or has symptoms such as cough, fever, diarrhea, vomiting or nausea is asked not to visit.

A minimum period of two weeks without any new transmission will be required before the outbreak can be lifted.
