Silver Streak – OSMH earns second provincial Quality Healthcare Workplace Award

11/29/2012 12:00:00 AM

(Thursday, November 29, 2012 - Orillia, ON) – For the second year in a row, Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital (OSMH) captured Silver at the Quality Healthcare Workplace Awards presented by the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.

The Awards recognize organizational efforts to improve healthcare workplaces in ways that contribute to the quality of work life and the quality of the care and services they deliver.  While more than 150 hospitals are eligible, OSMH is one of only 36 Ontario hospitals to receive the award which requires substantive evidence that initiatives and improvements are in place.

“Highlighting the enhancement of employee wellness opportunities was a big part of our application but we also focused on efforts to adopt ‘shared governance’ - a more inclusive style of decision-making that empowers staff throughout the organization,” said Angela Harwood, OSMH VP-People, Partnerships and Planning.

With more than 1,200 staff, OSMH is one of the largest employers in Orillia and maintaining a healthy workplace is a critical element to successful recruitment and ongoing retention.

"Having Inspired People and Teams is one of our hospital’s strategic themes, and this award recognizes our ongoing commitment and considerable efforts that go into supporting that objective,” said Elisabeth Riley, OSMH President and CEO.

The award was officially presented at the OHA’s annual conference in Toronto earlier this month.

Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital (OSMH) is located in Orillia, Ontario (just 114 kilometres north of Toronto) and serves more than 440,000 residents in North Simcoe Muskoka. OSMH provides a comprehensive range of programs and services, including medical, surgical and emergency care, dialysis, obstetrical and paediatric care, complex continuing care, mental health and rehabilitation services.
