Annual General Meeting Set for June 7

5/22/2007 12:00:00 AM

Last night the Board of Directors of Soldier’s Memorial Hospital met to set a date for the hospital’s Annual General Meeting (AGM).   The meeting will be held on Thursday, June 7, at 8:00 p.m. at ODAS Park.

Immediately before the AGM at 6:00 p.m., in the same location, there will be a special Town Hall members meeting, with a presentation from the hospital on the past year and plans for the future, as well as a question and answer session for those who hold membership with the hospital.

“We are very excited about the new approach we are taking for this year’s AGM,” says Board Chair Josephine Martensson-Hemsted. “The board believes that having a Town Hall meeting right before the AGM will provide us with the opportunity to highlight hospital successes as well as hear feedback from the community as a whole”.

The hospital is very proud that for the second consecutive year, it has returned a balanced budget, after years of multi-million dollar deficits.  The hospital is also nearing the end of the largest expansion in its history, has opened the new MRI to serve patients, and in the past year has welcomed dozens of highly trained and experienced new staff members.

“Our dedicated team of Board members and senior management has served this community and this hospital well over the last year” said Martensson-Hemsted.  “We believe that this is due in part to our nationally recognized board recruitment process; a process that has been emulated across Ontario and as far away as Nunavut”.

The hospital has received a great deal of interest again this year from individuals in the community who wished to volunteer to become board members of the hospital.  Soldier’s Memorial Hospital has an application procedure clearly outlined in the hospital governance which includes a skills-based application, as well as an interview and background process.  Prospective new board members are all required to go through this process to be considered for the board.

Recently, a special interest group put forward some individuals who they would like to see on the board.  Those individuals are welcome and encouraged to go through the same rigorous review process as all other candidates, as outlined in the governance of the hospital. The hospital has also asked a member from the interest group to be part of the review panel, but regrettably to date that offer has not been accepted.
