Prestigious Appointment for Soldiers’ Chief of Paediatrics

5/28/2007 12:00:00 AM

Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital is proud to announce that Dr. Gary Smith, the hospital’s Chief of Neonatal and Paediatric Medicine, has received a prestigious appointment. Dr. Smith has been promoted to Associate Professor, Division of Community Paediatrics, Department of Paediatrics, University of Toronto, Faculty of Medicine.

Dr. Smith is the only paediatrician not presently working at the Hospital for Sick Children to receive the academic rank of Associate Professor and the only paediatrician outside of the GTA with this level of academic status.

“I was extremely honoured to be selected by the promotion committee of the Department of Paediatrics, Hospital for Sick Children, for consideration for this promotion from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor. I am delighted that the decanal committee found merit in the request and has granted me this academic promotion,” says Dr. Smith.

"Dr. Gary Smith is an outstanding community pediatrician who has been committed to medical education, in addition to excellence in clinical care. He and his group in Orillia provide an excellent opportunity for our trainees to experience practice at a community hospital outside of Toronto," says Dr. Denis Daneman, Paediatrician in Chief at SickKids and Chair of Paediatrics and Professor at the University of Toronto.

“This academic rank signals the respect given to the paediatric teaching program here at Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital,” says Dr. Smith. “My colleagues, Drs Hudak, Gordon, Meeder and Barker are all members of our paediatric teaching staff and have managed to elevate the level of paediatric resident teaching to allow this recognition to take place. I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge my wife as a partner in this success. She has put up with many evenings of not having a husband as I spent many hours working on my research projects.”

The regional paediatric program at Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital provides care for children from across Simcoe County, Muskoka, Parry Sound and beyond. The hospital provides the only Level 2 neonatal intensive care unit in the region, and the only paediatric oncology program between Toronto and Sudbury. Soldiers’ paediatric asthma, diabetes, sexual assault and neonatal follow-up clinic are also the only ones of their kind in the region.
