President and CEO leaves

7/27/2007 12:00:00 AM

The Board of Directors of Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital and its President and CEO Bernie D. Schmidt have mutually agreed that Schmidt will leave his position at the hospital effective today.

“The Board is truly grateful for Bernie’s leadership over the past two and a half years,” says Board Chair Mary Silverthorn. “He has been our CEO during some of the most significant achievements in the hospital’s history, among them overseeing the $83 million expansion and redevelopment.”

Since his arrival in January of 2005, Schmidt has guided the hospital’s redevelopment including the opening of the Community Tower and the new Magnetic Resonance Imaging suite. Under his leadership, for the first time in many years, Soldiers’ has achieved two consecutive balanced budgets.

During Schmidt’s tenure, Soldiers’ also received increased funding for diabetes education, securing this important program, became an active participant in the provincial wait-time strategy, completed the most successful cardiovascular health awareness program project in the province and greatly increased its telemedicine program for patients.

“I have most enjoyed my time at Soldiers’ because of the great team of people I have had the opportunity to work with,” says Schmidt. “I am particularly proud of the number of excellent leaders and highly trained professionals we have been able to recruit from across the country. I believe this hospital is now well placed to continue as a regional leader within the North Simcoe Muskoka Local Health Integration Network.”

While Schmidt has led the hospital during a time of great change and growth, both he and the Board acknowledge it has also been a time of often very difficult challenges. There is mutual agreement that new leadership will help the hospital move forward into the future.

For the next few weeks, Dr. Don Atkinson, Soldiers’ Chief of Staff, will act as CEO on a very temporary basis; while Dr. Maarthen Reinders fills in as acting Chief of Staff. The hospital is beginning an immediate search for an interim CEO and expects to have someone in place within a matter of weeks. The longer-term search for a President and CEO to lead Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital on a permanent basis will begin in September.

Also today, the hospital announces that David Hughes, Chief Financial Officer and Aileen Ashman, Vice President of Human Resources and Organizational Development are leaving their positions effective today. The board thanks both of them for their contributions, and for the many new initiatives undertaken in their departments during their time here. Their roles have been filled on an acting basis by internal staff members while searches begin for permanent replacements.
