Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital Names Interim CEO

8/27/2007 12:00:00 AM

The Board of Directors of Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital is pleased to announce the appointment of Michael O’Keefe as the hospital’s interim President and Chief Executive Officer.

“Michael has had an extensive career in healthcare leadership both in Canada and internationally,” says Board Chair Mary Silverthorn. “Our Board of Directors feels very fortunate that he has agreed to lead Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital during this important transition period. We believe he is the right person to take a very detailed look at every aspect of our hospital, and to advise on improvements we can make to even better serve our patients and our community.”

O’Keefe has spent most of his career in senior leadership roles in Ontario hospitals. He has been the Chief Operating Officer at The Toronto Hospital (University Health Network) and Ottawa Civic Hospital. He was the CEO of York-Finch General Hospital and of a group of four Ontario Provincial Psychiatric Hospitals.

In his 30-plus year career, O’Keefe has also worked as CEO of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board and in senior administrative posts in the Middle East and the United Kingdom. He has Bachelor of Commerce and Master of Hospital Administration degrees and is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Medicine - Department of Health Administration at the University of Toronto. He also has extensive experience in hospital accreditation, having been a Surveyor with the Canadian Council on Health Services Accreditation for over 10 years.

“This is a unique opportunity to work on an interim basis with an organization that has a great number of strengths,” says O’Keefe. “Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital has excellent community support, a good clinical reputation, a redevelopment almost complete and a fairly sound financial position. I look forward to assisting the hospital in aligning its priorities, and in the planning to put a permanent leadership team in place.”

O’Keefe will join Soldiers’ on October 1, 2007. He has confirmed he will not be a candidate for the permanent position of President and C.E.O. The hospital board will begin that recruitment process this Fall with a nation-wide search. “Knowing we have Michael’s leadership and his breadth of experience to draw on during this interim period is extremely valuable,” says Silverthorn. “It gives us the confidence that we can take the time required to recruit our permanent CEO, knowing our hospital will be in very competent hands during that time.”
