Patient Safety Week at Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital

10/5/2007 12:00:00 AM

Everyday health care workers in Canada strive to provide the safest quality care to patients. At Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital, becoming a hospital known for patient safety is one of five key strategic priorities in our new strategic plan.

Next week, October 8 to 13, is recognized nationally as Canadian Patient Safety Week. The theme this year is Patient Safety: Be Involved. Ask. Talk. Listen. The emphasis is on encouraging patients to take an active role in their healthcare, and promoting communication in all healthcare settings between patients, caregivers and consumers.

“Patients are partners in their healthcare. We want them to know they should be involved in every decision,” says Soldiers’ Chief of Staff Dr. Don Atkinson. “This means coming prepared for appointments and asking questions. It also means telling the health professional everything they can about a recent illness or allergies or medications.”

At Soldiers’, a new patient safety page has just been posted on our website at www.osmh.on.ca. A poster, brochure and bulletin board campaign is also being launched across the hospital for Patient Safety Week. In addition, several “lunch and learn sessions” will be held for staff.

The awareness campaign is part of the Your Health Care - Be Involved initiative of the Ontario Hospital Association. The focus is five key tips for patients and family:

  • Be involved in your health care. Speak up if you have questions or concerns about your care
  • Tell a member of your health care team about your past illnesses and your current health condition
  • Bring all of your medicines with you when you go to the hospital or to a medical appointment
  • Tell a member of your health care team if you have ever had an allergic or bad reaction to any medicine or food
  • Make sure you know what to do when you go home from the hospital or from your medical appointment.
