OSMH Volunteer Association pledges $1-million over next 6 years

4/28/2009 12:00:00 AM

(Tuesday, April 28, 2009 - Orillia, ON) – The Volunteer Association of Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital (OSMH) capped off another successful year with a donation of $166,654 to the OSMH Foundation and a promise to raise $1 million more over the next six years.

Those announcements highlighted the annual Volunteer Appreciation dinner at Casino Rama April 24 that paid tribute to the more than 400 people who volunteer their time and effort to the local hospital.

“The proceeds are generated through a variety of methods,” said Sandra Johnston, OSMH Volunteer Director. “The coffee kiosk and the gift shop inside the hospital bring in the bulk of the money but we also supplement that with proceeds from fundraisers like our tag days, or special events like the Joint Effort concert at the Orillia Opera House in the Fall”.

“The pledge to raise an additional million dollars over the next six years is an aggressive target but it’s one that I’m confident we’ll be able to achieve thanks to the enthusiasm and dedication of our team of volunteers.”

In addition to their fundraising activities, volunteers perform a wide range of duties within the hospital. It’s estimated that the total number of volunteer hours at OSMH last year was nearly 60,000.

“The value that volunteers bring to our hospital is immeasurable,” said Elisabeth Riley, OSMH President and Chief Executive Officer. “In addition to the dollars raised and the time committed, our volunteers bring an extraordinary wealth of knowledge and compassion to the role that makes a positive difference in the lives of patients, visitors, physicians and staff everyday.”

The Volunteer Association also took time out of the evening to acknowledge many of its members who’ve reached long-service milestones, including Frances Clark, who has been volunteering at the hospital for 35 years. Josephine Dobson and Margaret Bailey were honoured for 30 years of volunteer service.
