OSMH creates Sea of Life to commemorate birth

6/11/2009 12:00:00 AM

(Thursday, June 11, 2009 – Orillia, ON) – A newly installed mural, decorated with colourful seaweed, sea creatures and schools of fish, is visible just outside of the Birthing and New Family Services unit at Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital (OSMH).

Proudly sponsored by Mariposa Homes, the new Sea of Life Baby Wall of Honour program established by the OSMH Foundation pays tribute to the hundreds of births that occur at our Hospital each year.

With a donation to the OSMH Foundation, a parent, grandparent, relative or friend may commemorate a birth with a permanent and personalized fish in our Sea of Life.

“OSMH has been the birthplace for babies across our region for over a century and we know the excitement that comes with welcoming a child into the world,” says Nicole McCahon, executive director of the OSMH Foundation. “As a parent, grandparent, relative or friend, you have the opportunity to commemorate this special occasion.”

But this thoughtful gift is not only for a recent birth, it can also be purchased to celebrate another special occasion, such as a birthday, christening, or graduation, adds McCahon.

The first tiles added to the wall feature recent newborns, births that have taken place over the years, as well as some in memory tributes.

“I will be purchasing three fish to commemorate the births of my sons,” says Danielle Tisi, a Foundation board member. “OSMH is a wonderful facility and one that I am privileged to have used. I want to make sure that the wonderful service and excellent care that I received from the physicians and nurses will be provided to future families and our community.”

All proceeds from the Sea of Life program support the Birthing and New Family Services (BANFS) program at OSMH. Our staff have the privilege of providing care to over 1,000 mothers, babies and their families per year, as well as 1,000 infants in our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

With gifts made to programs such as Sea of Life, we will be able to purchase equipment to support this vital service, for our children, our families, and our future.

Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital Foundation is a proud partner of Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital and the people of Orillia and North Simcoe/Muskoka. The foundation provides funds to the hospital to buy medical equipment, sustain programs and assist the hospital in maintaining its position as a leader in providing quality community based healthcare.
