OSMH ready to respond if called upon during G8 Summit

6/22/2010 12:00:00 AM

(Tuesday, June 22, 2010 - Orillia, ON) – As the clock ticks down toward the start of the G8 Summit later this week in Huntsville, Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital (OSMH) will continue to work closely with partner hospitals along with local and provincial emergency service providers to respond to any developments that may arise.

OSMH has been involved in emergency planning for the G8 Summit for many months as part of a provincial acute care planning committee designed to coordinate any necessary response to the Summit without compromising service to residents of Orillia and surrounding communities.

“Like most hospitals and emergency service providers throughout central Ontario, we’re certainly in a heightened state of alert and ready to respond if the need presents itself,” said Elisabeth Riley, OSMH President and CEO.

The hospital has stocked up on some additional supplies, added staff in some areas, and placed a 3-day moratorium on staff holidays during the Summit to ensure that adequate human resources are available if called upon.

“Emergency medical care will be available at the Summit site and at the hospitals in Muskoka. OSMH would most likely be impacted if the hospitals there were unable to cope with a sudden surge of patients.  From a geographic perspective, we are uniquely situated near the midway point of the G8 and G20 Summits so we must also be prepared for any incidents that may occur on area highways.”

As part of the hospital’s ongoing emergency measures planning, OSMH hosted a G8 Information Session for staff with representatives from the G8 Integrated Securities Unit. As well, ER staff recently underwent CBRN training, designed to prepare the hospital to deal with patients who may have been exposed to any Chemical, Biological, Radioactive or Nuclear material.

The G8 is one of the largest political gatherings in the history of Central Ontario and will involve leaders from the Group of Eight nations - France, Germany, Italy, Japan, United Kingdom, United States, Russia, Canada.  The G8 will be immediately followed by the G20 in downtown Toronto.

Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital (OSMH) provides a comprehensive range of programs and services, including medical, surgical and emergency care, dialysis, obstetrical and paediatric care, oncology, complex continuing care, mental health and rehabilitation services.
