Public adherence to visiting hours during C.difficile encouraged

8/30/2010 12:00:00 AM

(Monday, August 30, 2010 - Orillia, ON) – Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital (OSMH) is seeking the public’s assistance with compliance to its visiting policy while the hospital is in a C. difficile outbreak.

“We certainly recognize the value that friends and family provide to loved ones while in hospital,” said Cindi Wigston, Infection Prevention and Control Coordinator for OSMH. “However, because bacteria can be easily spread through contact with visitors and healthcare professionals, we ask that visitors comply with the visiting policy the hospital has in place.”

While there are no visiting restrictions in place at this time, OSMH will be strictly enforcing its visitor policy across all units.

To help manage the spread of infection, OSMH has also implemented a number of measures to manage the outbreak including enhanced housekeeping services on all affected units. However, as a visitor the single best defence against the transmission of C. diff is frequent and thorough hand washing upon entering and exiting the hospital.

OSMH would like to thank the public for their understanding and cooperation at this time.
