Increase in flu activity in the area brings increased surveillance at OSMH

Thursday, January 20, 2011

(Thursday, January 20, 2011 - Orillia, ON)  – Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital (OSMH) and the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit have been closely monitoring the increase in flu activity within the community and in the hospital.

While there are no visiting restrictions in place at this time, with the heightened flu activity across the province, OSMH is seeking the public’s cooperation in reducing the spread of the virus and will be enforcing its visitor policy across all units in effort to reduce the spread of the flu.

“We certainly recognize the value that friends and family provide to loved ones while in hospital,” said Cindi Wigston, Infection Prevention and Control Coordinator for OSMH. “However, because bacteria can be easily spread through contact with visitors and health care professionals, we ask that visitors comply with the visiting policy the hospital has in place.”

If you do come to the hospital as a visitor, we ask that you complete a thorough hand washing upon entering and exiting the hospital and the patient room. The best way to prevent the spread of illness is through diligent hand washing.

Wigston also asks that anyone who is ill refrain from coming to the hospital.

“If anyone is ill, we ask that you not visit the hospital, because you can still spread the virus to others up to 7 days after you begin to have symptoms.”

Influenza, commonly referred to as the flu, is a respiratory disease caused by a virus. Illness caused by the flu usually lasts up to 2 to 7 days, sometimes longer in the elderly and in people with chronic diseases. Because the flu is viral, it can be spread from person to person by coughing and sneezing without covering your mouth or nose, and touching surfaces without washing your hands.

OSMH would like to thank the public for their understanding and cooperation at this time.
