Flu outbreak declared over

Friday, January 28, 2011

(Orillia – Friday, January 28, 2011)  A flu outbreak declared Tuesday, January 25, 2011, on a medical unit at Orilla Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital (OSMH) was declared over today by the hospital and the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit.

“We’ve gone 8 days without any new, hospital-acquired cases of Influenza A on the affected unit (Soldiers’ 2), which clears the way to lift the outbreak,” said Cindi Wigston, OSMH Infection Prevention and Control Coordinator.

During the outbreak, the unit was closed to new patient admissions or transfers and access to the unit was restricted to those who had received this year’s flu shot or were on anti-viral medication.

Visiting restrictions have been lifted although the hospital reminds everyone that washing their hands before and after visiting patient care areas is strongly advised, as the flu virus is still prevalent in the community.   Visiting hours are 3-8 pm with a limit of 2 visitors per patient.

OSMH would like to thank the community for their support during this outbreak.
