8/8/2013 12:00:00 AM

(Thursday, August 8, 2013 - Orillia, ON)  – Years of commitment to the mentorship and training of young paediatricians has earned recognition for Dr. Gary Smith, a Paediatrician at Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital (OSMH).

Dr. Smith was presented with the 2013 Sustained Excellence in Community-Based Teaching Award from the University of Toronto at the Faculty of Medicine's 11th Annual Education Achievement Celebration in Toronto.  The award recognizes an individual for their sustained and exemplary teaching skills, demonstrated ability to stimulate learners to think critically, analytically and independently, and commitment to the enhancement of the learner experience.

"It is certainly a humbling experience to be recognized by the learners you mentor, especially out of all of the professors and mentors within the University of Toronto, " says Smith, who also serves as the Program Medical Director for Maternal, Newborn, Child, Youth, Mental Health and Diabetes program. "However this award should also recognize all my paediatric colleagues in Orillia - paediatricians, nurses, social workers, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, dietitians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and many others - who contribute to the fabulous learning environment that we have built here at OSMH."

An authority in paediatrics in both the region and across the country, Dr. Smith is being honoured for his mentorship and active involvement in teaching and his community.  Smith and his colleagues in the Orillia Paediatric Teaching Associates have been teaching and training medical students, family medicine residents and paediatric residents for over 30 years. The regional maternal, child and youth program in Orillia is extremely well recognized as a centre of excellence for patient care, academics, research and teaching.

"Over the years, the Orillia Paediatric Teaching Associates and OSMH have excelled in their approach to medical residency training with the support of Dr. Smith, who puts an emphasis on excellence in medical knowledge, clinical skills, communication and compassionate care,” says Dr. Michelle Gordon, Chief of the Neonatal and Paediatric Medicine Department at OSMH. “He is an outstanding clinician, educator, and role model for young physicians and medical students.”

“Dr. Gary Smith is an exemplary teacher and physician leader who has been an integral part of ensuring the health and wellbeing of young patients and families served by OSMH,” said Elisabeth Riley, President and CEO of OSMH. “My warmest congratulations to Dr. Smith on a very well deserved honour.”
