Sun City Swim proceeding

8/9/2013 12:00:00 AM

The 2013 Sun City Swim in support of Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital (OSMH) will proceed tomorrow (August 10, 2013) with a precaution to all participants following a water advisory announced earlier today by the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit.

The Health Unit has issued a swimming advisory for six beaches in our region including Couchiching Beach in Orillia, where the 4 kilometer event concludes after swimmers cross Lake Couchiching from Fern Resort.

An advisory is issued when water contains levels of bacteria indicating there may be an increased risk of developing minor skin, eye, ear, nose and throat infections and stomach disorders.

The health unit says people may still choose to swim during an advisory, but it may be best to avoid swallowing the water and dunking your head under the water.

In addition to ensuring all swimmers are aware of the risk, participants will also have the option to swim in the 1 kilometer loop that goes out into the Lake and returns back to Fern Resort.   No advisory has been posted for that area of the Lake.

The Sun City Swim begins at 8 a.m. at Fern Resort.
