(August 15, 2013 - Orillia, ON) – Greg Gee, Board Chair, and Elisabeth Riley, President & CEO, are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Nancy Merrow as OSMH Chief of Staff and Vice-President of Medical Affairs effective November 4, 2013 replacing Dr. Don Atkinson who has held the post for the past seven years and will be stepping down this Fall.

Dr. Merrow has served the past nine years as Chief of Staff at Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket where she first started as a family physician in 1985.  Dr. Merrow held two significant leadership roles with the Central LHIN (Local Health Integration Network) as the Lead Palliative Physician for Cancer Care Ontario, and Chair of the Hospice Palliative Care Transition Strategy Team.

"We’re excited to welcome Dr. Merrow into our organization and the community," said Gee.  "Through the recruitment process, it became clear that she has established herself as a top physician executive who is highly respected by her peers.   She will play an important leadership role in the future development of our hospital."

In 2011, Dr. Merrow successfully completed the Rotman Advanced Health Leaders Program, and became a Certified Canadian Physician Executive.  She passionately promotes the importance of the relationship between the hospital and its primary care and community partners and is dedicated to developing, coaching and mentoring physicians.

"Importantly, Dr. Merrow shares in our values and commitments to quality and safety," said Riley.  "OSMH has been on a journey of quality and process improvement for the past several years and we look forward to the insight that she will bring in her role.  Dr. Merrow will be a wonderful asset to the OSMH Leadership Team and we are thrilled that she has chosen to come to our hospital and serve the people of Orillia and area."

Dr. Merrow graduated with an M.D. from the University of Toronto in 1983, and completed her family medicine residency at Women’s College Hospital in 1985.  In 2000, she was certified by the American Board of Hospice and Palliative Medicine, and since 2004, has been a Fellow of the College of Family Physicians of Canada.

"I look forward to joining the team at OSMH," Dr. Merrow.  "It will be my privilege to establish working relationships, and in time, friendships that support the advancement of the organization."

Dr. Merrow started her medical career in Holland Landing, Ontario, where she practiced comprehensive family medicine from 1985 to 2004.  She is a passionate advocate and champion for the advancement of interprofessional patient-centred care and access to effective hospice palliative care.
