OSMH making adjustments to surgical services program

11/8/2013 12:00:00 AM

(Friday, November 8, 2013 - Orillia, ON) – Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital (OSMH) announced today it is making changes to its surgical services department to align more closely to best practices of other Ontario hospitals, address a current budget gap, and better position the hospital for future success under new provincial funding formulas.

Some of the changes include streamlining types of surgical supplies and equipment and transitioning from disposable to re-usable products, changes that will maintain quality and ensure cost-effectiveness. OSMH is also capping the volume of certain procedures based on available government funding. In addition, OSMH will be temporarily reducing the number of operating rooms from four to three for the final quarter of this fiscal year (January – March 2014).

“In the long run, these changes will enable greater access to care and create better value for patients as we manage our costs more effectively,” said Dr. Nicholaus Bauman, Program Medical Director, Surgery, CCC/Rehab & Cancer Care.

The temporary closure of one operating room has the potential to increase wait times for some non-urgent cases although surgeons will prioritize patients to treat those with the greatest needs first. Wait times for the majority of surgical services at OSMH are currently at or better than provincial averages or targets.

Access to emergency surgery will not be affected.

“OSMH has already demonstrated recent success in reducing our costs of providing hip, knee and cataract surgeries to better align with provincial funding formulas,” said Elisabeth Riley, OSMH President and CEO. “Making these additional changes now will allow for long-term sustainability of our surgical programs and ensure that community needs continue to be met.”

The hospital is working closely with physician leaders, surgeons, anaesthetists and surgical staff to increase awareness about the challenges and developing strategies to address them. There will be some staffing implications and OSMH is working closely with union leaders to lessen the impact as much as possible.
