Satellite cancer clinic at OSMH sees first patients

11/24/2014 12:00:00 AM

(Monday, November 24, 2014 - Orillia, ON) – The OSMH satellite clinic of the Simcoe Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre (SMRCC) at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre saw its first patients on Monday, marking opening day of the clinic on the newly renovated Harvie 2 unit.

Margaret Johnston of Orillia was one of the first patients through the doors.  Johnston was diagnosed with breast cancer in March 2014 and has received her chemotherapy treatments at the Regional Centre in Barrie.

“I’ll receive my final two chemo treatments at the Regional Centre as well but I’m here today to check my blood-work in advance of tomorrow’s treatment,” said Johnston.

“The new facility looks good and I’m excited for patients who won’t have to travel as far in the future,” said Johnston who quickly pointed out that staff at both facilities, “have been wonderful to deal with.”

Twenty patients are scheduled to be seen in the clinic during this first week of operation, a number that will gradually increase as services start to ramp up.   The first delivery of adult chemotherapy at the satellite clinic will take place next week.

“We need a bit of time to grow into our new surroundings and processes,” said Cheryl Harrison, OSMH VP-Patient Services, Regional Programs and Chief Nursing Executive, who credits the dedicated work of staff and physicians from OSMH and the Regional Centre over the past two years that made this day a reality.

“The final outcome is a satellite cancer clinic that provides safe, quality care closer to home, in a larger and more welcoming setting for patients and families,” said Harrison.

An official grand opening of the clinic is being planned for early in the New Year.
