Soldiers for Soldiers’ holiday campaign honours loved ones

12/11/2015 12:00:00 AM

(Friday, December 11, 2015 - Orillia, ON) - Honour a friend, commemorate a loved one or recognize a special doctor, nurse, or healthcare professional with the Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital (OSMH) Foundation holiday campaign.

Every December, a beautiful Christmas tree is proudly displayed in the OSMH lobby with messages of hope and love showcased on toy soldier ornaments. For donors like Mary Hurl, the Soldier for Soldiers’ campaign is a way for her to commemorate her late father, Jack Hurl.

“Every year I give a soldier in honour of my father Jack. Having lived in Orillia his whole life, he believed in giving back to the community and helping others however he could,” she explained.  “Donating to the Soldiers for Soldiers’ campaign is my way of saying thank you and keeping his passion alive.”

The Soldiers for Soldiers campaign launched in late November and will raise funds for the hospital’s greatest needs.  Over the past eight years, the campaign has raised more than $265,000 to support essential equipment and technology purchases at OSMH.

“December is the season of giving and we would like to invite our community to purchase a soldier in support of our holiday campaign,” said Nicole McCahon, executive director, OSMH Foundation. “Every soldier that fills our Christmas tree represents the generosity of our donors and will make a difference in the lives of patients and their families this holiday season.”

Those who did not receive a soldier in the mail can contact the OSMH Foundation at 705-325-6464 to make a donation. Each soldier can be dedicated in honour of a loved one or as a gift of thanks, with space on the soldier for a short message. Once received, the soldier will be placed on the decorated tree in lobby at OSMH.
