Emergency Department

The Emergency Department provides a well-supported and dynamic clinical environment.

Emergency Department Details

  • 12 acute care beds
  • 4 resuscitation beds
  • 12 minor treatment beds
  • 60,000 visits annually; 140-150 visits per day

Physicians benefit from timely specialty consults, hospitalist support, and opportunities for skills expansion and mentorship. Emergency Physicians at OSMH are compensated by Alternate Funding Agreement (AFA).

What is an AFA?

This is a renumeration agreement with the Ministry of Health. This is a set amount of funding based on hospital volume, patient acuity and coverage needs. These arrangements are designed to provide income stability for physicians. In addition, emergency physicians can bill Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) for Fee-For-Service (FFS).

Scheduling Structure

  • 7 shifts per day, with someone new coming on every 2 hours
  • Each shift is 7.5 hours in length
  • Night shift is solo physician coverage from 11:00pm-7:00am
  • Emergency physicians do the hospital admissions. Once patients are admitted, Hospitalists are the Most Responsible Person (MRP)

Intensive Care & Mental Health Services

Critical Care Support

  • 10-bed Specialist-Supported Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
  • Critical Care Response Team (CCRT) – nurse led team

Inpatient Mental Health Services

  • Schedule 1 Psychiatric Facility
  • 25 inpatient mental health beds
  • 4 extra-care beds for higher-acuity psychiatric care

Obstetrical & Newborn Services

OSMH plays a key role in regional maternal and newborn care, offering strong interdisciplinary support.

  • Level 2C Obstetrical Centre
  • Level 2 Nursery
  • Collaborative obstetrical care involving family physicians, anesthesia, pediatrics, and nursing teams

These services support physicians with an interest in low-risk obstetrics and comprehensive family medicine.

Professional Development

Simulation Lab Learning Opportunities

OSMH is committed to professional development and providing a learning experience that closely aligns with the clinical settings. The newly renovated Simulation Lab replicates a patient room and offers state of the art equipment including a variety of high-fidelity mannequins and video recording options. The adjacent classroom hosts the Simulation Command Centre where training sessions can be viewed in real-time or view previously recorded sessions on the large screen television. The Simulation Lab is a safe learning environment where Healthcare Providers can practice new skills and manage crises. Improving patient safety and experience with “hands on” education with a wide variety of simulation equipment that can recreate patient care in any area of the hospital.

The Family Medicine Teaching Unit (FMTU) is an academic primary care health clinic affiliated with Orillia Soldiers Memorial Hospital (OSMH), the University of Toronto’s Department of Family and Community Medicine, the Couchiching Family Health Team (CFHT) and the Couchiching Ontario Health Team (COHT).
