Exemplary Standing awarded to OSMH following on-site Accreditation Survey
(Orillia, ON) – Accreditation Canada, the independent organization that assesses quality and safety performance at hospitals across the country, has awarded Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital (OSMH) with Exemplary Standing following an on-site survey that took place March 30 – April 2, 2026.
Exemplary Standing is the highest designation a hospital can achieve.
During their visit, a team of 4 surveyors evaluated OSMH against 24 standards, including 25 Required Organizational Practices (ROPs) and more than 2,300 individual criteria. The hospital achieved a 99% compliance rate overall and met 100% of ROPs.
In its report, Accreditation Canada gave credit to the OSMH team, stating, ‘The strength of this organization is its people. There is a caring and collaborative community of staff, physicians and volunteers who are united in a commitment to patient-centered care and the ongoing advancement of the organization.’
“These results are a powerful reflection of the dedication, professionalism, and compassion our teams bring to their work every day,” said Tom Roberts, Interim President and CEO of OSMH. “They should take pride in this incredible accomplishment and recognition of their outstanding work.”
The surveyors also praised OSMH’s approach to People‑Centred Care, including collaborative partnerships with team members and the community, the use of co‑design approaches to improve services and programs, and meaningful engagement of patients, caregivers, and families.
While OSMH performed exceptionally well on the quality and safety markers, the report recognized the challenges posed by aging infrastructure and limited space to accommodate growth and parking.
‘Space limitations continue to place significant pressure on the current site,’ the report stated. ‘To maintain service capacity and support a positive patient and staff experience, the organization will need to pursue short-and-medium-term solutions while simultaneously advancing planning for a new hospital.’
“Delivering care of this calibre within aging infrastructure speaks volumes about the strength of our people and our culture of excellence,” added Roberts. “At the same time, it reinforces why it is so important to continue moving forward with planning for a new hospital. Advancing this work is critical to ensuring our community can continue to count on high‑quality, modern care for generations to come.”
